The department was established in the year 2011 with an intake of 60 Students. The department offers 4-year B.E. program (8 semesters) in Mechanical Engineering which is affiliated to, Assam Science and Technology University and Gauhati University and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Department also preparing to be accreditated by NBA-New Delhi.


Some of the Salient Features of the Department are:

• The department has highly qualified, competent and motivated faculty members with specialization in the fields of operations research, thermal engineering, energy technology, etc.
• The department is in the process of developing a web-link which will allow the students and staff to have access to electronic formats of files which will include syllabus, class plan, lesson plan, previous year university question papers, lab manuals, assignments and materials for teaching.
• It is proposed to develop a department library which will have well stocked books, journals and technical literature, internet facility, etc.
• The department takes personal interest in assisting students to overcome personal problems which may hinder the student’s academic performances.
• Extra classes are arranged for the benefit of students needing extra help and one to one interaction with respective faculties

Departmental Mission and vision

Mission: To enable students from every parts of India to acquire quality education in the field of Mechanical Engineering by imparting practical knowledge through highly competent and dedicated faculty/staff.
Vision: To develop technically sound and socially competent students who are highly motivated to start careers which will enable them to contribute significantly to their society in general and professions in particular.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

PEO-1: Core competence: Graduates will be well educated professionals who utilize their intellectual learning, applied technology, experience, leadership skills, and global awareness in successful careers and continue to improve their skills through lifelong learning and advanced studies.
PEO-2: Higher studies and research: Graduates will effectively practice as professional engineers, managers, technocrats and leaders in the mechanical engineering and energy sectors.
PEO-3: Social Responsibility: Graduates will successfully combine fundamental engineering knowledge, core leadership skills, and the practical experience gained at the Institute to turn ideas into reality for the benefit of society.

The program outcomes describe what students expected to know or be able to do by the time of graduation from the program.
The Program Outcomes of UG in Mechanical Engineering are:

1. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering will be able to apply the knowledge of Mathematics, Science and Engineering.
2. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering will be able to design and conduct experiments, also analyze and interpret data.
3. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering will be able to design a system, select the components and process to meet the desired goal within the realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability.
4. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering will be able to apply engineering and management principles individually or in a team in a multidisciplinary environment.

Engineering Mechanics: Several Innovative Experiments have been designed enabling students to acquire basic knowledge of Engineering Mechanics
Basic Thermodynamics: Ergonomically designed models ( two strokes and four strokes C.I. & S.I. engines, different types of boilers, Boilers mounting and accessories, special engines-Wankel engines and Turbojet engine) being displayed describing basics of the Thermodynamics.
Theory of Machines: Models of mechanisms, brakes, clutches, different types of gears, governors and working models of universal governors, balancing machines, epicyclic gears and belt drives, where students perform hand on experiments
Fluid Mechanics: Eight experiments including Vortex flow, Reynold's number, Pipe friction Metacentric height, Bernoulli's Apparatus etc. has been installed where students have to perform experiments
Heat Transfer: Seven experiments including heat transfer through solids, liquids, powder and composite walls. Stefenj-Boltzman´s Apparatus, heat pipe, demonstrations, emissive Apparatus are being conducted by students
Instrumentation: Seven experiments based on pressure, temperature, speed, torque, displacement, strain & load are being performed in this lab
Strength of Material: A 10 Ton UTM Machine has been installed for large number of experiments and research. Several other material testing machines are also under the process of acquisition. Building materials used locally are also being tested in this lab.
Internal Combustion Engine Lab: Two 4 (Four) stroke 4 (Four) cylinder IC engine (Petrol and Diesel variants) is installed in the department for conducting different engine performance related testing and experiments.
Computer Lab: This facility is earmarked for project work and research based activities of the students of the department.
CNC Lab: A CNC machine has been installed in the Department. Final year projects can be executed in this State of the Art machine.
Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Lab: Several test rigs of Vapour Compression Refrigeration, Vapour Absorption Refrigeration, Ice making, Air-conditioning and model of Cooling Tower will be procured soon.
